Spear or Sword?
With the release of NF we get new classes, weapons yadda yadda yadda...
the paragons weapon, for those of you who are blind and somehow dont know, is a spear which is a ranged attack weapon that only requires 1 hand.
since most monks use a +5e sword with an enchant, armour or health mod and a foci (or on occasion shield) in the of hand, they forgo the ranged attack of a wand in favour of the handle mods of a sword. But with the spears, afaik, they will have the same mods as a sword.
So heres the question, any of you gonna get yourselves a spear similar to the totem axe or rajazhans fevour so u can do that lil bit of dmg again or are you gonna stick with your swords? ive been using the preorder spear this morning; im only hitting for like 10, but it does mean i dont accidently run at the enemy while calling targets to hench lol

Without the req in it, what's the point in doing 2-3 dmg?
The only reason I can see is so that your hench will attack one target. If you don't hit anything yourself, the henchmen will do whatever they like, no matter how many times you call a target.

I think you should use a fiery spear of enchanting +5 energy so if someone to use mark of rod on someone you could cause burning from range. Or cold if you want spinal shivers etc.
(although you should be monking)

With the anticipated changes in inscriptions, you may be able to apply a +5 energy modifier to a no requirement spear (7-10 damage maybe?), and then you'd actually have a more sizeable difference.
I'll likely switch from sword/axe to spear if that option is available - otherwise, I'll probably stick to my swords.

It doubt it will be a significant difference, but there's certainly no disadvantage to using spears over axes or swords.

Spear seems nice for building up adrenaline (or isn't there a Furious mod for spears?), but I doubt you have any adrenaline skills on your Monk Spear looks better to me though (not that I use +5 energy weapons, but still, I might), so I guess that's what'll depend more I guess.

I would probably stick to my totem axe or FFS of enchanting.I would like to find a Hod sword or a mod for one.

Arguably the difference is minimal. However if you are using an item for general PvP/PvE, I would say go with an icy +5 energy spear of Enchanting just in case you have a necro that uses Spinal Shivers.
If you are doing UW farming with an SS, a +5 energy sword is nice to switch to so you can attack Aatxes with SS on them, triggering their Ripostes and thus making SS fire off more quickly.
If you use a Mo/A with Return in PvP, then it really doesn't matter since the most ideal weapon would likely be a +5 (or -5) Crippling weapon of Fortitude.
I guess for most purposes however a spear might be better since you could do your 2-3 damage from a safer range whenever you get bored, lol.

The almighty Ensign (and I mean that in the best possible way) has already commented on this topic here. His advice pretty much echoes the general consensus: Spear is better, but not that much better that it would make a difference in most situations.
If you're using a PvP-only character, then it makes sense to use a spear instead of the usual axe/sword. For RP characters, I don't think it's worth switching over unless you use some wierd build with adrenaline skills, or if you don't already have a good caster sword/axe and are going to buy one after Nightfall comes out.

Interestingly enough, my friend encountered one disadvantage of using Spears instead of swords: you can't use ripostes! One of the korean guilds in the top50 runs Mo/W Blights with Balanced Stance and Deadly Riposte instead of the Mo/A with Return and Dark Escape :P. It was pretty amusing, and all joking aside, managed to be pretty effective. Effective enough to replace Mo/A ... ? No clue.

you can give the spear to your hero and they will get the full +17 energy without making them think they are warriors.

A spear allows monks to wand targets and still maintain the +60hp +17 energy that they could have with a sword. This is priceless against trappers, and though it doesn't add much pressure, it never hurts to do damage.
